The Hidden Power of Perseverance

I recently took my son for a swimming lesson.

I witnessed a glaring contrast between the young lad that began swimming lessons about 2 years ago and the grown up young lad I saw swimming.

You see it has been a journey and it continues. My son hated the idea of being forced to learn how to swim.

It was painful and frustrating coercing him to enter the pool and just be as if it’s natural to just start swimming.

Often responding to his defiance to comply would lead me to compare him with other kids and thus responding more emotionally when I should have been more understanding, patient and supportive.

Then the seeds of doubt start to creep in saying “it cannot be done”, “this is how he is, you need to accept that”, “stop pushing him, try again later”.

But I refused to quit because there was a purpose to what I was trying to achieve for him. Josh Shipp nailed it when he said “Perseverance is stubbornness with a purpose”.

You see there was a reason far more important in persevering to continue taking my son for the swimming lessons. It is a vital life skill to have for obvious reasons.

I could not afford to let him miss out on it. The price of not attaining swimming ability was too great compared to the price I had to pay to persist in getting him the lessons.

I had a reason far more important in persevering to continue taking my son for the swimming lessons. It is a vital life skill to have for obvious reasons.

I could not afford to let him miss out on it. The price of NOT learning how to swim was too great compared to the price I had to pay to persist in getting him the lessons.

Through its hidden power, perseverance yields fruit. The fruit blossoms for all to see, but the power is hidden through the process.

We might outwardly express our anger and frustration at the discomfort we face when we try to push through. It is not the emotional outbursts that keep us going.

It is the silent, hidden, and ever present power of perseverance that keeps us on course to fulfilling our initial purpose for what we are persevering for.

Hope and courage add the fuel needed to keep going even when the resistance gets the better of us.

Just like what goes up eventually comes down, the law of perseverance MUST produce its fruit at the appointed time.

At some point in our lives we will face the challenge of having to push through tough walls to get what we really want if we want it bad enough.

Therefore we should first persevere with a purpose.

We should recognise the hidden power we possess when we persevere.

We should hold on even more to hope.

We should be courageous and face our fears head on.

Because ultimately, when we have persevered enough the fruit will show.

I do not know if my son could be swimming champion one day, but I know I have persevered enough and will continue to do so to give him one of life’s most important skill, the ability to swim. It might just save his life one day or he could be instrumental in saving the life of another. For that purpose I persevered.

What purpose are you willing to persevere for?

I hope this piece was helpful. If you enjoyed it, please share it with those you care about.

Cordially.
