One way to solve this is via brute force — enter via one of the 32 entry points and test each possible combination of routes. I implemented this in Excel where each row corresponds to a move.
The first row specifies the starting row, column, and absolute direction in degrees (i.e., 0 degrees, 90 degrees, 180 degrees, 270 degrees).
The following row “moves” by updating the row and column using trigonometric identities. It updates the previous absolute direction based on the relative direction in the cell. This process is repeated until it hits the :), hits the Xs, hits the ?s, leaves the grid, or becomes recursive. If it hits the ?s, user input is tested for all possible options.
