My Favourite Thing About Medium

The beauty of breadth

Without a doubt my favourite thing on medium is breadth. The breadth of topics, the breadths of views, the breadths of opinions. As an aspiring writer it is easy to overlook the depth of content on Medium and focus on the grind of improving our craft, every now and then I step back and am reminded I’m part of a world that both fascinates and inspires me.

Like many who aspire to write, both for the love of the art and in order to one day further their specific niches in life, it is easy to get bogged down by the constant drive to improve our writing. It is easy to fall into the trap of reading only that which relates to the journey of being a writer, an entrepreneur or a digital hustler.

Often times, we miss the fact we are guilty of forgetting about the wider world of medium, the reason it was created in the first place — to inspire and to share stories about the world around us. We forget that world is there, we fail to get out, we sit hunched in our metaphorical houses, lit by the dim light of the writing grind, feeding ourselves on the same articles we read every day. The inevitibility of aspiration.

Those who criticise Medium for becoming overly populated with articles about how to write good articles have got it wrong, Medium is as treasure trove of articles, it just seems that way because we forget the rest is out there. We focus on improving, on creating, and before you know it, we have tunnel vision.

I love being a part of the Medium Partner Program, I love the fact for the first time ever I’ve managed to earn real money online for my writing, I will be forever grateful to Medium for that, but despite the liberation this fills me with, it is not my favourite thing about the community.
