The Innovators of Technology

Over the past two centuries, computer and digital based technologies have evolved significantly. The rapid evolutions can be attributed to the numerous innovators, mathematician, and engineers who are sharing their ideas and vision for the future and putting those ideas to action. In the 1600’s and 1700’s many mathematicians found ways to rapidly perform calculations which paved the way for the computing world and having a machine do the calculations instead of by hand. logarithms were In the 1800’s there was not much buzz about technology but some individuals began to develop ideas for the future. By the 1900’s many more scientists and mathematicians began to explore the computing world and a man by the name of Alan Turing developed the first Turing machine that was able to compute anything computable. The late 1900’s saw the world’s first computer and also companies like Apple, Microsoft, Google and Amazon pup up. Since the 2000’s began technology has been evolving at a incredibly fast rate where smartphones became the norm, computers became more efficient and an essential tool for many households.

All this growth began with Ada Lovelace; Ada was an English mathematician and writer who in my opinion was ahead of her time. She wrote the first book now called Scientific Memoirs which acted as a 65 page blueprint for a computer revolution. The book included ideas for the layout for the first computing machine, the first computer program, and complex mathematics. Ada is considered by many the first computer programmer and a pioneer of the computing world. Another innovator of technology that helped change the scenery of the computing world is Mark Dean. Mark Dean co-developed the first IBM personal computer, contributed to creating the first color monitor and gigahertz chip, and helped develop the technology for computer plugins.

One thing that really stood out to me from the BBC Documentary was learning that Ada Lovelace was such an influential figure in the computing would yet I have not heard of her after being in the computer science program at the University of Minnesota for four years. I also think it is unfortunate that there are stereotypes that males are “better” at or more suited to work in computer science when the very first computer scientist was a female. I also have female friends that I knew had an interest in computer science but were hesitant to study it due to the lopsided ratio of men and women in most computer science programs. Something that still baffles my mind that was mentioned in one of the articles is the fact that the very first programable computer was created in 1943 which is less than 80 years ago. Nowadays, most Americans likely cannot imagine life without a computer and the advanced technologies we have. I think it is crazy that computers have become so integrated in our live even though the very first personal computers came out in the 1980’s which is only 40 years ago.
