Bombshells in the January 6 Hearing

The hearings include new information that we should all pay attention to

The first public hearing of the January 6th committee took place Thursday, and included critical new information. Unfortunately, there is so much content already out there, so many videos, and so much insurrection fatigue in the country that people are not really listening.

What the hell were they going to do with those zip cuffs?

So that’s new. The Proud Boys (or at least a contingent) were prepared and planning to go to the Capitol, and were not swept up in a riot they did not plan. They actively instigated the attack on Capitol police to break through the barriers, and an Arizona group was separate and more heavily involved.

We also heard that the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers met the night before, likely to plan the attack. (The Oath Keepers were in military regalia and vests, and went in using an organized “stack,” and had weapons available.)

Second, we learned that Trump tolerated and allowed the attack, with full knowledge of what was happening.

This is arguably the most important question. Was Trump sort of a buffoon who pumped up his riotous base and … “Oh my! They attacked the Capitol!” Or was he in on it.

Note: We have NOT (yet) seen clear evidence of Trump himself pre-planning an insurrection. But then his inner circle are all refusing to testify or pleading the 5th, so we have to see what turns up in texts and emails.

What we do see, almost literally, is Trump sitting outside his office watching the attack on TV, for hours, with a steady stream of advisors, staff and family members asking him to call off the attack. He does not do so.

This is actually pretty huge. Trump never gave up, and most certainly was not shocked or against the attack. Even his “go home we love you” video was tweeted after Pence got Milley to send in the DC National Guard. Trump’s tweeted video was political theatre, sent only after his attack was about to be defeated because DC guard troops were on their way.

The last new thing we see in the initial hearing is that there was an overall, multi-pronged plan to overturn the election. We had previously known this to some extent — there were many activities and Trump was and still is relentlessly on message that he is the legitimate leader of the country, but (in the words of Bill Barr) that’s bullshit.

His activities from Georgia to Jan 6 to Pennsylvania, to the DOJ and others were relentless, single minded, and completely divorced from reality. Other than political reality. If more people sworn to uphold the US Constitution had not actively stood against Trump, he would have gotten away with it.

We knew 90% of the story before the hearings began. But now we know the Proud Boys had a premeditated mission to go after the Capitol, Trump stood by and let it happen, Trump wanted to join them, and it was part of an all-consuming, illegal set of plans to overthrow a valid election.

I hope more Trump insiders crack and we find out who organized the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, but until then there is still new information to digest.
