12 Tips for a More Motivated Team and Better Results

Great things in business are never done by one person. They’re done by a team of people. — Steve Jobs

The team can be motivated in the following twelve ways:

1. Finding a Sponsor Who Can Motivate the Team

A sponsor or a champion is a person who oversees the Six Sigma Project and he is accountable to the Apex Council. As the sponsor is the leader of the entire project, it’s very important for him/her to be highly motivated and pass on the same motivation and passion within his team.

2. Forming the Right Team

Every effort made towards the process improvement is a team effort. So forming the right team becomes a high priority job. It is wise to have members in the team who may receive the direct benefits of this process improvement. Leaders should be chosen in such a way that they have substantial past achievements so that other members respect and believe in the leader’s capabilities.

3. List Important Strategies in the Project Charter

The project charter should be aligned with the organizations needs and goals. This helps the sponsor in making the right decision for the process improvement. Project charter should contain all the necessary data, including goals, requirements, resources, and action plan and team members.

4. Have Realistic Goals

It is of no use if the goal set is unachievable. The failure might demotivate the team. The goal should aim at reducing the waste and cost while improving the quality.

5. Use Lean Approach First

6. Work Phase by Phase

7. Reward Suitably

Six Sigma helps in reducing costs and increasing the savings for a company. If a portion of this saving is used by the company to reward the team, it can help in keeping them motivated and work more passionately.

8. Leaders Should be Motivated and Accountable

The motivated leader should be kept motivated and rewarded for his work. Leaders keep the stream of motivation flowing within the project. They pass on the same energy to their team and this helps in increasing the efficiency of the team.

9. Reward Honest Employees

Various teams work on different parts of the project. As a team they all help in process improvement. But what if they start hiding the negative results or what if they start manipulating the results? This can harm the whole project, thus it becomes vital to reward those members who come forward and accept their mistakes.

10. Introduce the Team in a Right Manner

Follow an inclusive approach towards all the team members. Set up a proper communication channel and include all the members in it. Share the achievements and results with them. This helps in building a positive environment.

11. Have meetings for Follow Ups

Having periodic meetings is of prime importance for process improvement. The agenda for the meetings can be tracking the tasks done so far, resolving problems (if any), suggesting improvements that yet to be made.

12. Broadcast Positive Results

Employees should be aware of the results of their hard work, this gives them purpose and required motivation to stick to the goal and keep looking for ways to improve the process. Thus sharing of the achieved outcome becomes crucial.

As is it said:

“None of us is as smart as all of us.” — Ken Blanchard

And “all of us” can be useful for the organization only if they are motivated.
