Massacres by Extremists Should Make Us Better at Talking about Extremism

The New Zealand massacre was a horrendous thing. Any talk about how some reactions to this event have been less than helpful must be prefaced with a massive amount of sadness for the victims and their families. This amount of hate in the world has no place, and any attempt to excise the ideas or people causing these tragedies is a good cause. This is why public discourse about these topics is so important; if we allow the discourse to be hijacked, then we are led astray and perhaps we perpetuate the problem in some roundabout way, by talking about things incorrectly.

Hard right-wing ideas are becoming more mainstream, especially in America, but the left is using this massacre as an opportunity to smear thought leaders who have simply voiced concerns about lower levels of immigration and ideas within the Muslim faith. Public figures like Jordan Peterson, Douglas Murray, and Sam Harris. Regardless of what you think about these public figures, how likely do you think it is that they secretly condone these kinds of shootings as claimed by Aziz and others?

Aziz appears unable notice the fact that if we blame individual extremists individually, as whites are, without reference to their cultural beliefs, that exculpates Jordan Peterson, Sam Harris, and Douglas Murray from blame, because they are a part of the culture. In cases where we only blame individuals, it should be the case that that person acted wholly alone and without reference to any cultural values. There exists no straight line of causality between critiques of belief and immigration to pulling the trigger on innocent people.
