A Guide To Being Poor

I love all those blog posts on how to save money. Except they aren’t exactly geared toward those of us who don’t actually have any money to start with.

I don’t know if my family was poor growing up. My dad was a fireman and my mom stayed at home until us kids were in high school. I know we had everything we needed so I wouldn’t say we were poor.

I think that’s how I became good with money. I got good at getting what I needed without spending much.

Pretty much my entire adult life I have been poor. I’ve always worked and always had a job. But I could never get out of the hold that money has over us. It’s a pretty stressful situation and one that can get to you over time.

So, when a blog about saving money says something like, “Take fewer vacations to save money.”, that doesn’t really help me since I never actually take vacations.

Or, “Stop buying those expensive frappe mocha blah blah drinks at your favorite coffee shops.” when I can hardly afford the generic coffee that I put in my coffee maker at home? Yeah, that’s not helpful in the slightest.

If you look at me and if you look at my kids, you would never know how much money we don’t have. We eat good food (maybe not always the most healthy options but their bellies are full), have nice clothes, and we have the things we need.
